Bangüe, Ilana Volcov’s first solo album, awarded by the Department of Education of the Sao Paulo State Government, carries a valuable collection of Brazilian stories.
With a contemporary eye on tradition, the singer shows new songs or little known ones, by recognized authors and young composers, covering artists from different generations and regions of the country, such as Capiba, Caetano Veloso, Guinga, Chico Saraiva and Karina Buhr.
‘Bangüe’ – an African word for “sugar cane mill” – appears in Capiba’s song : “Recife, cidade lendária/ de pretas de engenho cheirando a bangüê” (‘Recife, legendary town of mill (labours) black women, smelling of bangüe’). Just like the sweet scented black women tell the story of monoculture and a society based in slave labour, Bangüe’s songs, with its many scents, evoke expressions of the Brazilian soul in such a graceful and poetic manner.

Ilana Volcov debuts with refined solo album ‘Bangüe’
Tarik de Souza, “Jornal do Brasil”
Best known for her work alongside Eduardo Gudin, Ilana Volcov debuts with her solo album already showing maturity both in the use of her high pitched voice and in the choice of a coherent repertoire of stories, landscapes and Brazilian rhythms.
Luiz Fernando Viana , from “Folha de Sao Paulo” newspaper.
How well she can sing, God! Her highs are as accurate as is her pitch. Her voice, sweet and refined, has such a depth that it seems to dig space in the listener’s ears, seeking for a shelter where it could better be felt … Her serenity reveals an artist who knows what she wants with her singing.
Achilles Reis, from ‘Brazilian Voice Newspaper’
Full of great artistic intentions, the singer from Sao Paulo Ilana Volcov launches ‘Bangüe’, her first solo album. The work, an independent production, celebrates traditional Brazilian rhythms with elegant contemporary arrangements.
Beto Feitosa, sites ‘Music News’ and ‘Ziriguidum’
With a good background carrier (including composer Eduardo Gudin’s group), Ilana solo debuts with technique and perfect finish.
Antonio Carlos Miguel, ‘O Globo’ newspaper
‘Bangüe’ ended up being the title of the album which features the beautiful voice of Ilana Volcov – perfect pitch and emission, attested in the ‘a capella’ performance ofMorada (author unknown) – the country of singers.

Ilana is a perfect interpreter, in addition to having a wonderful musical taste.
